Job Description

At RN schools, you will learn the basics of a registered nurse's job description. They are responsible for teaching patients how to live with their injuries or diseases, give information on proper nutrition, exercises and post treatment care. They also need to know how to work medical equipment, give medications, help run and analyse diagnostic tests and keep patients' charts up to date with medical histories.

There are many other daily tasks involved, including supervising other nurses and establishing and maintaining a care plan for each patient that includes putting in IVs, taking blood, checking for proper drug dosages or dangerous interactions and administering a variety of other treatments.

RN Degrees Offered

There are 3 degree options you can look into when you want to become an RN. You could take a 2 year Associate's of Nursing Degree or a 4 year Bachelor of Sciences in Nursing at a registered nurse school, or a 3 year nursing diploma you can obtain from a hospital.

Having a bachelor, or BSN, or course can open more doors for future advancement than the other 2 options give you. Your RN education will include chemistry, anatomy, physiology, nutrition, psychology and microbiology.

You will then get clinical experience by working in departments like pediatrics, psychiatry, maternity and surgery. After you finish your studies, you will need to become licensed by taking the National Council Licensure Examination, or NCLEX-RN exam.

Bridge Classes and Accelerated Programs

Many nurses start their careers as certified nurses (CN) or licensed practical nurses (LPN) which are lower level positions. It is a smart decision though if you want to get started on your career, gain some experience and slowly work your way up the ladder, so it is not uncommon for these nurses to one day take continuing education to become an RN.

Luckily, there are degrees designed exactly for this purpose, allowing LPNs to further their studies from home, while working, to be qualified to work as a registered nurse. You could take an LPN-RN bridge class, which will allow you to study only the parts of a registered nurse's training that you did not already complete with your LPN training. If you are already an RN but only got an associate's degree, you could take an RN-to-BSN program, which enables you to get your bachelor's degree while working, which in turn will allow for higher salaries and opportunities.

Also, if you are in another medical field and want to switch over to nursing, you could enrol in accelerated classes, since you already have a medical background. If you have another medical bachelor's degree, you could take an accelerated BSN program and be done in 12-18 months. You could also do an accelerated MSN in about 2 years, coming from another field. RN schools in person and online really try to accommodate both the full time student and the full time professional in achieving their career goals.
