RN License Verification

Before being hired as an RN, you will have to go through an RN License Verification. This is easily done by anyone that is interested in verifying an RN's license.  Most states have RN License Verification available through their state Board of Nursing websites. You just need to enter either the license number, the social security number and birth date, and/or the first and last name of the person whose license you are trying to verify and the website will tell you whether the person truly has a license and whether it is current or not.

Another resource for RN License Verification is the Nursys License Verification system, of which many states now take part. This is a national license database where, for a fee, an RN can get his or her license verified when applying for a license in another state, and employers can verify the licenses of potential employees.

Nursys RN License Verification is participated in by the state licensure boards in Alaska, Arizona, Arkansas, Colorado, Delaware, Florida, Idaho, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New Mexico, North Carolina, North Dakota, Ohio, Oregon, Rhode Island, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Vermont, Virginia, Washington, West Virginia, Wisconsin, and Wyoming. Many of the state nursing boards that participate in the Nursys RN License Verification system will no longer provide this service for nurses or employers and will refer all requests to the Nursys system.

In order for a nurse to use the Nursys RN License Verification system, the nurse needs to have her license application packet and be applying for a license within the US and territories. He or she needs to be looking for verification of license(s) for states that participate in the Nursys system for verification for CGNIS, Visa Screen, APRN, Case Manager Certificate, or a Medical Board.

The Nursys RN License Verification requires you to provide your name, social security number, email address, and license number(s) and a credit card to pay the fee. The fee is $30, and the verification is good for 90 days. If you need an RN License Verification after this 90 day period you will have to request a new verification (and pay a new $30 fee). As of January 2009 you can only use the Nursys online verification system, they will no longer offer a paper based option. A receipt is sent to the provided email address after each verification.
