Becoming a registered nurse is not easy: you need to attend a registered nursing program, then study to pass the National Council Licensure Examination-Registered Nurse Exam to become certified in your state, and the exam is long and gruelling. Often times you will need to take between 20-30 hours of RN continuing education classes, some or most of which needs to be done in contact hours. Many times you can complete some of those continuing education credits online and at your own pace. In some cases, certain professional nursing activities can also be counted towards your credits. Some obligatory courses may be assigned to you, like prevention of medical error or domestic violence, and then in other cases if you are enrolled in a nursing degree program for another sector of nursing, that could also be accepted. The guidelines are so diverse that you need to ensure you meet the conditions for your state.

RN CEU classes can be taken at local colleges or in the medical clinic you work at, but very often, registered nurses do them online, and there are many free online CEU classes to look through, but you need to make sure your RN continuing education credits come from an accredited source. Some of the choices you have for classes include neurological nursing, ethics / law, pediatrics, progressive care, emergency / trauma, cardiovascular, depression, heart disease, genetics, immunization of children, alternative dispute resolution and solutions for nursing shortages. There are so many other classes as well that a registered nurse has a world of options in taking a class that is best suited.

RN continuing education is not a standard thing around the US, so the first step upon attaining your certificate is looking into the requirements in your state. You may simply have to pay a fee every 2 years and not take any RN CEU at all, or you may have specific course titles to take, or anything in between. you could do them online, or you may have to do them all as contact hours; the range is great, so once you know what you must do, look into the online and community options that best suit your needs.
