You've just spent anywhere from 2-4 years in registered nursing school and you are ready to start working in the field, but before you are qualified to do so, you must pass the NCLEX RN exam. This is the National Council Licensure Examination-Registered Nurse Exam and is mandatory for anyone looking to practice as a registered nurse.
Before taking the exam though, it helps to know a little about the requirements and the format to ensure your success. You should also decide beforehand in which state you plant to work since the NCLEX-RN is regulated state by state and if you decide to move somewhere else, they may require you to retake the national exam to be eligible to work in that state.
The national certification exam is a very comprehensive analysis of your knowledge and skills, and it could take you anywhere up to 6 hours to take. It is completely done on the computer and the RN questions you receive are based on your previous answers. What this means is that if you get an answer wrong, your next question will be easier and essentially demote you to a lower level of understanding.

You will therefore be given more questions to assess your competency. On the other hand, if you get a question correct, your next question will be harder, and the more questions you get right, the fewer NCLEX RN questions you will have on your exam. This is a computer adaptive format and it will result in your receiving anywhere from 75-265 NCLEX RN questions.
Your nursing school studies will obviously be the focus of questioning, but they will be precise; not general math or science questions. You can expect to see questions on subjects like infection control, promoting and maintaining health, pharmacological therapy, adapting physiologically and coordinating a safe care environment.
They will be precise and difficult, but everything will have been covered in your RN program, so you simply need to study hard and prepare for the exam to ensure success. Your final result will either be a pass or a fail, and you will find out about a month after the test. If you fail, you will get a detailed assessment of your areas of strength and weakness.
If you don't pass the test the first time, you can register for RN reexamination as many times as you need to. Each time you register, it will cost you $200, and according to the National Council's policy, you have to wait 91 days between retakes. Each state may have a different rule about that though, so check the policy where you live.
You will also need to ensure that your certification remains up to date once you have it. Each state differs in their requirements, but usually you need to renew your certification every 2 years and you are required to take 20-30 credits of continuing education classes to be eligible for renewal. These classes can be taken from a variety of subjects and most are done online.
The NCLEX RN exam is not an easy endeavor, but if you have worked hard in your RN program, you should have covered all the essential information you need to pass the exam. Don't worry though, if you do fail, it will only give you experience and practice to pass the exam the second time.
